Where possible I like to accompany the camera operator to help with deciding what to film and how (after consulting with our Producer) since I know what will be most useful for the edit.
Because of this I often build excellent working relationships with my colleagues, and whilst there are different opinions on creative execution there's always mutual respect for each other's input, we learn from each other and in some cases a wonderful creative flow is attained. Ultimately, we function as a team working toward the same goal and not as individuals.
For the opening sequence, the first edit established the location, event branding and our two characters.
We re-shot the exterior once a more interesting sky presented itself to us, removed the branding shots as they were present elsewhere throughout the video, and shortened the character introductions.
Coding workshop originally filmed with our female lead.
We re-shot with our male lead for a better balance between the two characters in the overall edit, and shortened the sequence for tighter pacing.
Unusually for an editor I don't like being stuck in a darkened room all the time! Walking through the event space I loved the mix of event brand colours on the venue windows and saw an opportunity for a stylised sequence. I directed the camera op and performers to walk through the space then intercut the footage to make a visually-striking sequence that serves as a breather between sections in the edit.
An additional request was to edit a behind-the-scenes video showing the event space construction. I accompanied the camera op and together we captured the various build and technical set-ups just one day pre-event.
These videos serve both as a memory for the attendees and a promotional tool to help build anticipation for future events across social media, even a year post-event.
